On June 30, 2004, Congress passed the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004.  This law requires local agencies to develop a policy that addresses the growing problem of childhood obesity.  Four basic components of the policy are:  nutrition education goals, physical activity goals, nutrition standards, and other school-based activities.  The School District of Waukesha's Board of Education passed the School Wellness Policy (#5141.7) on August 9, 2006.

Each school has a wellness committee and the district has an oversight committee called the Local School Wellness Committee.  The Local School Wellness Committee has subscribed to a resource called "Nutrition Nuggets - Food and Fitness for a Healthy Child".

The Department of Public Instruction has put together a resource on Competitive Foods and Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value.   Foods of minimal nutritional value means: (i) In the case of artificially sweetened foods, a food which provides less than five percent of the Reference Daily Intakes (RDI) for each of eight specified nutrients per serving; and (ii) in the case of all other foods, a food which provides less than five percent of the RDI for each of eight specified nutrients per 100 calories and less than five percent of the RDI for each of eight specified nutrients per serving. The eight nutrients to be assessed for this purpose are-protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, calcium, and iron.  Examples of these foods are listed in the document on DPI's website (link above).

A list of recommended beverages and snacks that meet the criteria of a healthy snack and other healthy school snacks can be accessed.

All food items including those sent for class distribution (parties, birthdays, etc.) will be handled in accordance with the Protocol for Food Safety in Schools.

The State of Wisconsin's Department of Health and Family Services has developed tools for diet analysis, physical activity and weight for adults and children.  They also have information and resources about the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.
