Competency
Program Description
The Competency Graduation Program is an opportunity for
severely credit deficient seniors to complete academic work
in order to graduate on time with a regular high school
diploma.
Students who join the Competency Graduation Program must be entering
their 4th year of high school – regardless of
credit status. Students who prefer guided instruction do
well within the program. Each student must
complete and pass work to a state-set standard in the four
core academic areas. All work is finished on a pass/fail basis.
All work is completed in class with the guidance of the
instructors. There are no exams and no homework. Competency
Students must finish to a passing level all work assigned as well as
accumulate the
required employment hours and volunteer experiences. As is the case
with all Harvey Philip Programs, class size in Competency
Graduation Program is
kept at 15.
Volunteer Work
Seniors at Harvey Philip are required to complete four
volunteer "missions" within the academic school year. All
volunteer missions are set up by staff and held during the
regular school day. Volunteer missions can include doing
actual physical labor (raking leaves/painting buildings,
hauling lumber) or office work (stuffing envelopes or making
phone calls). Students may opt to do their own volunteer
work. This must be pre-approved by staff and documented
officially. In this case students must complete 40 hours of
volunteer work within the school year.
Volunteer missions have included working for the Leukemia
Society, Public Television Stations, working with brain-injured
adults, decorating nursing homes for the holidays, or raking
leaves and preparing homes for the elderly for winter.
Volunteer work gives students a chance to demonstrate
GENEROSITY
and build a stronger sense of
BELONGING
both to the school and to the larger community
