As planned, we held our lockdown drill yesterday.  Our students did a great job of following our emergency procedures.  The drill was brief, and we were able to return to our normal school activities quickly.  We will hold at least one additional drill this year.

Please remember there is no school on Monday, January 21.  Teachers will be participating in district inservice in the morning and will be here at Prairie in the afternoon.  We will use the time to prepare for next month's student-led conferences. You will hear much more about these conferences very soon.  We are looking forward to involving all of our students more fully in our parent/teacher conferences!

Thanks for your continued support of Prairie Elementary!  Have a great weekend!

Jump Rope for Heart:  On Tuesday, February 12, Prairie students in grades 3-5 will "Jump Rope for Heart"!.  This is an annual event that reinforces the educational messages of staying tobacco free, eating right and exercising as part of a healthy lifestyle while also raising money for the American Heart Association.  Students in Grades K-2 will participate in a number of activities involving jumping fun over the next few weeks in their physical education class.   Please see the link on our website home page for the flyers and necessary forms.

Sodexho Parent Advisory Committee:
During the last several years Sodexo has hosted a Parent Advisory Committee with interested parents to learn about the food service program, make suggestions and let them know their concerns. They are looking to hold the first meeting mid February. They are held at West High School, starting time is 5:00 pm and last for about 1 hour. Please contact Ruth Bentley, ext. 4035, Roy Blankenheim, ext. 3396, or Laura Weisbrod, ext. 4332, if you have any questions or to sign up.

Dismissal Plans:  I do have one request that will help make sure that our end-of-day routines run smoothly.  Please communicate with your student before school where they should be going after school each day.  With one phone line and only one staff member covering the health room and office after 2:30 p.m., we cannot guarantee that a message with a change of after school plans will get to your student.  Thank you for your help with this.

Drop-off & Pick-up Reminders:  In the morning, playground supervision begins at 8:20 a.m. Please do not drop your children off at school before that time. In the event of inclement weather, they will be let into the building at 8:20 a.m.  Children should be dropped off on Center Road or School Drive. The front driveway is for school busses and day care vans only. Your child should enter the building at their grade level designated entrance. The front doors should only be used if they are tardy.

If you pick up your child after school, please arrange a meeting spot at the north or south end of the building. Do not arrange to meet your child at the main entrance. It has been difficult for staff to maintain bus lines when exiting the building due to crowds of adults and students.

Outstanding School Fees:  You will be receiving a statement of your student's fee account if you have an outstanding balance on school fees.   If you are unable to pay the entire balance, we are happy to work out a payment plan for you.  Please contact the office for assistance;  checks should be made out to the School District of Waukesha.  District policy states that fees outstanding as of December 15th are considered past due and subject to go to collections.

Classroom Treats:  Please remember that it is District policy that all food provided for treats, parties and classroom activities be commercially packaged or prepared by a licensed vendor.

Too Sick for School:  As we have entered cold and flu season, please remember that if your child has been sick, they should not return to school until they have been free from vomiting, diarrhea or a fever for at least 24 hours. Please see more detailed guidelines in the attachment entitled "Too Sick for School".

2013 Waukesha Education Foundation Celebration of Excellence:  The Waukesha Education Foundation will host a fundraising event on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at South High School.  Please see the attached flyer or their website,, for more specific details.

These are the kinds of decisions the carnival planning committee makes every year as they put together this most-anticipated event. If you’ve got ideas or suggestions or something you think would really help make the PTA carnival a success for students, teachers, and families alike, let’s hear ‘em! This year’s carnival will be onFriday, April 19. The planning committee will start meeting soon. Contacting Betsy Peters at 262-548-6347 to share your thoughts and enthusiasm.
Did you know...? Money well spent
At a recent PTA meeting, members present voted to give each teacher $100 (specials teachers received $50) to use at their discretion in their classroom/s. That adds up to more than $2000 that PTA has committed to the school, giving teachers & staff the flexibility to add to their classrooms in ways that other budget sources may not allow. PTA has already received many thanks from staff for this gesture. But the thanks go right back to you, our Prairie families, for continuing to support PTA by buying Scrip cards and Market Day products, and attending special events, family nights, and PTA meetings. Couldn’t do it without you!
On the calendar:
Prairie Talent Show: Fri, Feb. 8, 6:30pm
More than 20 students (or groups of students) have the courage to get up on that stage and perform for us! Let’s show our encouragement at the Talent Show on Fri, Feb. 8, 6:30pm. See you then.
