Food Safety in District Schools With
the new wellness focus, we will be recommending more healthy snacks for
students if they wish to bring one for their classroom break. However, we will continue with the
same procedures for eating foods/snacks in our classrooms as we did during
the last school year. When a
personal snack is brought to school for snack time, it should not be
shared. Snacks for mid-morning
break should be eaten by person who brought the snack. Snacks
for birthday treats should be commercially prepared or provided by a licensed
food vendor. If snacks are
homemade, they should be individually wrapped. Parents/others who are baking items in their homes must
follow the safe health practices.
Adult supervision shall be provided during food distribution to insure
the use of gloves or proper utensils such as tongs, spoons, spatulas,
etc. Prior
to handling food, all persons should thoroughly wash their hands with soap
and water. Food
handlers should not prepare or serve food if they have symptoms of illness including,
but not limited to coughs, colds, diarrhea, vomiting or have open cuts,
burns, abrasions or sores. School-Sponsored
Events: At the elementary level, parents are
to supply food and beverage that are commercially prepared or provided by a
licensed food vendor. School
Lunches/Snacks from Home: If a food
is perishable, parents are encouraged to provide their child(ren) with
lunches and snacks in an insulated lunch box, cooler or double-layered bag
with a frozen container such as a freezer gel pack or a frozen drink. Snacks
should be as healthy as possible.
The new legislation is recommending less high in sugar foods and more
healthy snack/food items, including cold lunches! Snacks for the classroom should always be nutritious
and healthy. A recommended snack
list is on our website.
