Homework Guidelines

The Waukesha School District approved in June, 2001, a Homework Policy for all schools.  It includes the directive that "each school is to develop a homework statement based upon current research and best practice guidelines.  This would include age and developmentally appropriate practice with input from its school community.  This statement shall include, but is not limited to, recommended average homework time in minutes by grade level(s); guidelines for effective homework assignments; parent, teacher and student responsibilities; and home/school communication strategies."

At Randall, we have had these guidelines in place since 1995.  They were updated/revised by our teachers and reviewed by our Site Council. They are included as a separate handout for you.

As your child progresses through the elementary grades, he/she will be bringing home class work or homework.  Homework can help to develop student responsibility and organizational skills.  It provides for practice and application of knowledge and additional enrichment activities.

Quite often your child will need assistance with homework.  In order to provide consistent assistance parents need to determine a child's needs in terms of support and time.  Encourage your child to write down assignments (in assignment notebook that is required in grades 2-6) and note deadlines.  Then check with your child on a daily basis to see what homework is due.  Help check homework and discuss specific problem areas.

When assistance is needed, talk your child through the problem or question until he/she can find the solution.  Be observant for signs of problems and call the teacher if homework becomes too challenging.  Remember to help your child balance household responsibilities, play, and study.  Support your child by being available to provide assistance when necessary.
