Wisconsin became the 30th State on May

"Wisconsin" is a Chippewa
word meaning "grassy place".
Nickname: The Badger State
(The official nickname of "The Badger State" dates back to the lead
miners in southwestern Wisconsin in the 1830's. The miners were so busy
digging - like badgers - that they didn't take time to build homes and moved
into abandoned mine shafts, it later became a description of the character of
the energetic and hard working settlers of territorial Wisconsin.)
