Wisconsin became the 30th State on May 29, 1848

"Wisconsin" is a Chippewa word meaning "grassy place".

Nickname: The Badger State
(The official nickname of "The Badger State" dates back to the lead miners in southwestern Wisconsin in the 1830's. The miners were so busy digging - like badgers - that they didn't take time to build homes and moved into abandoned mine shafts, it later became a description of the character of the energetic and hard working settlers of territorial Wisconsin.)

Other "Unofficial" Nicknames:
The Dairy State
America's Dairyland

State Capital: Madison

State Flag: WI flag
Flag Adopted 1913 -- Amended 1979
In the center of the shield is the shield of the United States and it’s motto - “One Out of Many.” The surrounding pictures represent Wisconsin's main industries, mining, shipping, labor and agriculture. The cornucopia and pile of lead stand for farm products and minerals that help bring prosperity to the state.
